MAKASSAR — Flash floods and landslides that have struck parts of Aceh Tamiang Regency since late November 2025 have caused extensive damage. Several villages have been severely devastated, transportation routes have been cut off, and thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate. This hydrometeorological disaster has not only damaged infrastructure and residential areas but has also disrupted access to health services and increased the risk of post-flood diseases in affected locations.

In response to this emergency situation, Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar (Unismuh Makassar) has once again deployed its Emergency Medical Team (EMT) Wave II to serve in Aceh Tamiang. The official send-off ceremony was led by the Rector of Unismuh Makassar, Dr. Ir. H. Abd. Rakhim Nanda, and took place at the Rector’s Office on the 17th Floor of the Iqra Building, Unismuh Makassar, on Saturday, 20 December 2025.

The event was also attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS/FKIK) Unismuh Makassar, Prof. Dr. dr. Suryani As’ad, along with members of the faculty leadership.

The Head of the EMT Unismuh Makassar, dr. Muh. Ihsan Kitta, Sp.OT, explained that the deployed medical team consists of ten personnel. The team includes two specialist physicians, one general practitioner, three nurses, one midwife, one pharmaceutical professional, and two medical clerkship students.

According to dr. Ihsan, the team is a collaborative group comprising lecturers from study programs within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Unismuh Makassar as well as healthcare professionals from RS PKU Muhammadiyah Unismuh Makassar. The deployment of EMT Wave II forms part of the Community Service Program for Flood and Landslide Disaster Response in Sumatra Batch II, initiated by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology.

In addition to medical personnel, EMT Unismuh Makassar has delivered health logistics assistance in the form of approximately 200 kilograms of medicines and medical equipment, with an estimated value of around IDR 40 million. The team has also distributed 300 hygiene kits to support sanitation needs and to help prevent the spread of diseases in evacuation shelters.

Through the deployment of EMT Wave II, Unismuh Makassar reaffirms its commitment to humanitarian response and knowledge-based community service, particularly in providing assistance to communities affected by natural disasters across Indonesia.
