MAKASSAR – Students of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar have once again achieved a remarkable accomplishment by securing funding under the 2026 Student Creativity Program in Exact Sciences Research (PKM-RE). The team was awarded funding for their research proposal entitled “Development of Pectin-Coated Water Hyacinth Extract Microparticle Suspension with Colon-Targeted Drug Release for the Inhibition of Shigella sp. in Diarrhea Therapy.”

This achievement reflects the strong commitment of FMHS Unismuh Makassar students to developing innovative research that utilizes natural resources while addressing pressing public health challenges. The Student Creativity Program (PKM) is a national initiative designed to encourage university students to produce scientific works, innovations, and research projects that contribute meaningfully to society. Under the PKM-RE scheme, students are encouraged to conduct experimental research and advance scientific knowledge through evidence-based investigations.

The funded research team is led by Ainun Masyurah (10513120023) from the Bachelor of Pharmacy Program, accompanied by Seriyani Wulandari (105131121723) from the Bachelor of Pharmacy Program, A. M. Miftah Mallaha (105421102724) from the Medical Education Program, and Rahmat Hidayat (105131103024) from the Bachelor of Pharmacy Program. The team is supervised by apt. Istianah Purnamasari, S.Farm., M.Si.

The proposed study focuses on developing a drug delivery system based on water hyacinth extract microparticles coated with pectin, enabling targeted release of active compounds in the colon. This innovative approach is expected to enhance the effectiveness of treatment against Shigella sp. infections, one of the leading bacterial causes of diarrhea that continues to pose significant public health concerns in many regions.

The collaboration between Pharmacy and Medical Education students demonstrates the strong multidisciplinary spirit fostered within FMHS Unismuh Makassar. Such cross-disciplinary synergy serves as a valuable foundation for producing research with not only academic significance but also the potential to generate tangible benefits for healthcare and society.

The success in obtaining PKM-RE 2026 funding is expected to inspire other students to actively engage in research, innovation, and national scientific competitions. Beyond strengthening students’ academic competencies, participation in PKM also provides opportunities to develop critical thinking, collaborative skills, and research-based problem-solving abilities.

Mahasiswa FKIK Unismuh Makassar Lolos Pendanaan PKM-RE 2026, Angkat Inovasi Ekstrak Eceng Gondok untuk Terapi Diare

MAKASSAR – Prestasi membanggakan kembali ditorehkan oleh mahasiswa Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK) Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar. Satu tim mahasiswa berhasil lolos pendanaan Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa Riset Eksakta (PKM-RE) Tahun 2026 dengan mengangkat inovasi penelitian berjudul “Pengembangan Suspensi Mikropartikel Ekstrak Eceng Gondok Tersalut Pektin dengan Pelepasan Terarah di Kolon untuk Inhibisi Shigella sp. dalam Terapi Diare.”

Keberhasilan ini menjadi bukti komitmen mahasiswa FKIK Unismuh Makassar dalam mengembangkan riset inovatif yang berorientasi pada pemanfaatan sumber daya alam serta solusi terhadap permasalahan kesehatan masyarakat. Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa (PKM) sendiri merupakan program nasional yang mendorong mahasiswa untuk menghasilkan karya ilmiah, inovasi, dan penelitian yang berdampak bagi masyarakat. Pada skema PKM-RE, mahasiswa didorong untuk melakukan penelitian eksperimental dan pengembangan ilmu pengetahuan berbasis riset.

Tim yang berhasil memperoleh pendanaan tersebut terdiri atas Ainun Masyurah (10513120023) dari Program Studi Sarjana Farmasi sebagai ketua tim, bersama Seriyani Wulandari (105131121723) dari Program Studi Sarjana Farmasi, A. M. Miftah Mallaha (105421102724) dari Program Studi Pendidikan Dokter, dan Rahmat Hidayat (105131103024) dari Program Studi Sarjana Farmasi. Tim ini dibimbing oleh apt. Istianah Purnamasari, S.Farm., M.Si.

Penelitian yang diusulkan berfokus pada pengembangan sistem penghantaran obat berbasis mikropartikel ekstrak eceng gondok yang dilapisi pektin sehingga mampu melepaskan zat aktif secara terarah di kolon. Inovasi tersebut diharapkan dapat meningkatkan efektivitas terapi terhadap infeksi bakteri Shigella sp., salah satu penyebab utama diare yang masih menjadi masalah kesehatan di berbagai daerah.

Kolaborasi antara mahasiswa Farmasi dan Pendidikan Dokter dalam tim ini menunjukkan kuatnya semangat multidisiplin yang terus dikembangkan di lingkungan FKIK Unismuh Makassar. Sinergi lintas program studi tersebut menjadi modal penting dalam menghasilkan penelitian yang tidak hanya memiliki nilai akademik, tetapi juga berpotensi memberikan manfaat nyata bagi dunia kesehatan.

Keberhasilan lolos pendanaan PKM-RE 2026 ini diharapkan menjadi motivasi bagi mahasiswa lainnya untuk terus aktif dalam kegiatan penelitian, inovasi, dan kompetisi ilmiah tingkat nasional. Selain meningkatkan kapasitas akademik mahasiswa, keterlibatan dalam PKM juga menjadi sarana untuk melatih kemampuan berpikir kritis, kolaborasi, serta pemecahan masalah berbasis riset. Pimpinan dan sivitas akademika FKIK Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar menyampaikan apresiasi dan ucapan selamat kepada seluruh anggota tim serta dosen pembimbing atas capaian tersebut. Prestasi ini diharapkan dapat menjadi langkah awal menuju keberhasilan pada tahapan selanjutnya serta semakin mengharumkan nama FKIK Unismuh Makassar di tingkat nasional.
