MAKASSAR — The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar, held an International Guest Lecture under the theme “From Laboratory Diagnostics to Therapeutics: Integrating Biomedical Science and Pharmacy for Better Patient Care” on Wednesday, 28 October 2026. The event took place in the Theater Room on the 6th Floor of the ADIS Building, FMHS Unismuh Makassar.
The event served as an international academic forum to facilitate knowledge exchange, broaden scientific perspectives, and promote the integration of biomedical science, laboratory diagnostics, and pharmacy to improve the quality of patient care. It was attended by the leadership of FMHS Unismuh Makassar, members of the academic community, and a delegation from the University of Luzon, Philippines. The participation of the international delegation reflected the faculty’s commitment to expanding academic networks and creating opportunities for educational collaboration and scientific development across institutions.
In her opening remarks, the Dean of FMHS Unismuh Makassar, Prof. Dr. dr. Suryani As’ad, M.Sc., Sp.GK., Subsp.KM, emphasised the importance of multidisciplinary and international collaboration in addressing the increasingly complex challenges of healthcare delivery. “Through this International Guest Lecture, we hope to foster the exchange of knowledge and academic experiences that will enrich the perspectives of both lecturers and students. The integration of biomedical science, laboratory diagnostics, and pharmacy is essential to supporting sound clinical decision-making and improving patient safety and the quality of healthcare services,” she stated. She further highlighted that international academic forums provide higher education institutions with valuable opportunities to strengthen research culture, enhance the quality of teaching and learning, and establish sustainable partnerships with institutions worldwide.
The International Guest Lecture featured two speakers whose expertise complemented one another. The first speaker, Prof. Tzarita Marie P. Mayo of the University of Luzon, delivered a presentation entitled “Reflections on Teaching and Learning Medical Parasitology.” Her presentation explored approaches to teaching and learning medical parasitology as an essential component of health professions education. In a proposed quotation pending confirmation by the speaker, Prof. Mayo emphasised that medical parasitology education should continue to evolve through relevant, interactive, and scientifically grounded learning approaches. Such approaches enable students not only to master fundamental concepts but also to connect their knowledge with health challenges encountered in clinical and professional practice.
The second speaker, Zulkifli, S.Farm., M.Kes., from Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar, presented “The Role of Pharmacy in Evidence-Based Therapeutics and Patient Safety.” His presentation highlighted the role of pharmacy in evidence-based therapeutic practice and the importance of patient safety in healthcare delivery. The discussion underscored the significance of collaboration among healthcare professionals in ensuring that therapeutic decisions are rational, effective, and safe. In a proposed quotation pending confirmation by the speaker, Zulkifli emphasised that pharmacy practice must be grounded in robust scientific evidence and guided by a commitment to patient safety. Collaboration among healthcare professionals is essential to ensuring that treatment selection and medication use are appropriate, taking into account effectiveness, safety, and individual patient needs.
The session was moderated by Dr. dr. Ami Febriza A., M.Kes., AIFO-K, who also serves as Head of the Master’s Program in Biomedical Sciences at FMHS Unismuh Makassar. The presentations and discussions were expected to broaden participants’ understanding of the relationship between biomedical education, laboratory diagnostics, and therapeutic applications in healthcare practice.
In addition to the speakers, the event welcomed a delegation from the University of Luzon, Philippines, comprising Dr. Imelda E. Cuartel, Dean of the College of Education and Principal of the Senior High School; Dr. Ma. Emma J. Tuvera, Doctor of Arts Program Coordinator at the Graduate School and Program Coordinator of the College of Liberal Arts; Prof. Jhared C. Calimlim, Administrative Assistant and Internationalization Focal Person of the Graduate School; Dr. Carmelita S. Quinto, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Assistant Registrar, and Director for Academics of the UL Satellite Campus; Dr. Dante A. De Castro, Officer-in-Charge Dean of the College of Criminology; and Prof. Tzarita Marie P. Mayo, Dean of the College of Medical Laboratory Science, Pharmacy & Biology, who also served as one of the featured speakers.
The delegation’s participation enriched the academic exchange and provided opportunities to share experiences in higher education management, teaching and learning development, and the internationalization of higher education. Academic interactions between the two institutions are expected to provide a foundation for future collaboration in education, research, and human resource development.
The International Guest Lecture represents one of FMHS Unismuh Makassar’s initiatives to provide its academic community with internationally oriented learning experiences. Through this forum, participants had the opportunity to explore developments in their respective fields while gaining a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of education, research, and healthcare practice. By focusing on the integration of laboratory diagnostics, biomedical science, and pharmacy, the event is expected to encourage adaptive approaches to teaching and learning in response to scientific advances and reinforce the institution’s commitment to producing competent graduates who prioritise patient safety. FMHS Unismuh Makassar remains committed to expanding academic partnerships and fostering an educational environment that promotes knowledge exchange, research development, and the advancement of health sciences education at both national and international levels.
