The establishment of the Faculty of Medicine And Health Sciences of Unismuh Makassar began with the visit of the Vice Rector I of Unismuh Makassar Abdul Rahman Rahim (2006) to the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia and was received directly by the Minister of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia Prof. Dr. Bambang Sudibjo, the main purpose of the visit was to discuss the permission to open the Master of Management Program of Unismuh Makassar, on the sidelines of discussions with the Minister of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia which was also attended by Prof. Dr. Dr. H.A.Karim Saleh (professor of Economics Unhas), Andi Jam’an, SE, Msi (Secretary of the Opening Team of the MM Unismuh program). Dr.H.A.Karim Saleh (Professor of Economics Unhas), Andi Jam’an, SE, Msi (Secretary of the Opening Team prog.MM Unismuh) developed again talks that not only Master of Management Program but also the need for doctors in Eastern Indonesia is quite high while FKIK education providers are very lacking in Eastern Indonesia.
The above discussion by the Vice Rector I was conveyed at a routine meeting of the leadership of Unismuh Makassar which was chaired by the Rector of Unismuh Drs.Irwan Akib.MPd and attended by the chairman of BPH KH.Djamaludin Amien and other leaders.
In several meetings, the Rector and the chairman of BPH strongly responded to the idea of opening a Faculty of Medicine And Health Sciences at Unismuh Makassar, and then the meeting authorized the Vice Rector I of Unismuh (Abd. Rahman Rahim, SE, MM) to conduct an initial exploration with the Faculty of Medicine of UNHAS and visit FK UMJ in Jakarta and FK UMY in Yogyakarta in order to open the Faculty of Medicine And Health Sciences at Unismuh Makassar.
In FK Unhas A. Rahman Rahim met informally earlier Dr. Budu, Ph.D, Sp.M. (Chairman of the Medical Education Unit) who is also a cadre of IMM Unhas, then in many talks related to the opening of FKIK Unismuh conducted informally at the Bukit Baruga Antang Mosque Makassar (both are congregants of the Bukit Baruga mosque) In 2006 After everything was considered adequate, then for the first time formally the Rector of Unismuh (Drs. Irwan Akib. MPd) together with the Vice Rector I (Abd.Rahman Rahim, SE, MM) facilitated by the chairman of MEU FK Unhas (Dr. Budu.Ph.D, Sp.M) to meet with the Dean of Faculty of Medicine Unhas (Dr. Irawan Yusuf, Ph.D) while conveying the plan to open FK at Unismuh Makassar and under the guidance of FK Unhas.
Like a dipper, the Dean of FK Unhas responded and responded well to the plan by first conveying several things that must be considered and prepared carefully by Unismuh Makassar before submitting an application for the opening of a medical study program to the Director General of Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia.
After a meeting with the Dean of FK Unhas, the Rector of UNISMUH Makassar, Drs. Irwan Akib, M.Pd, formed a Preparatory Team for the Establishment of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Medical Study Program in accordance with the Rector’s Decree Number: 139 of 2006, dated December 21, 2006.
After the appointment of the Medical Faculty Opening Team chaired by Ir.Ifayani Hanuraat, MM and the person in charge Abd.Rahman Rahim, the committee immediately moved quickly by conducting several stages of preparation at the University level through various meetings and meetings both internal unismuh and external parties unismuh within a period of 1 year such as: MOU signing with Faculty of Medicine Unhas and General Hospital Sheikh Yusuf Gowa, the provision of educational infrastructure facilities FK Unismuh (study rooms, laboratories, etc.), lecturers and other human resources, and in 2007 the proposal for the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences UNISMUH proposed to the Director General of Higher Education Diknas RI in Jakarta.
From the results of the proposal, on May 16-17, 2008, the KKI Team (Indonesian Medical Council) conducted a visitation to Muhammadiyah University to see the feasibility of opening a study program.
Alhamdulillah with all gratitude to Allah SWT, on July 29, 2008, an operational permit was issued from the Director General of Higher Education for the Medical Study Program with No. 2422 / D / T / 2008.
In 2008 (August) for the first time accepted 50 new students out of 100 applicants.
According to the Regulation of the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education Number 43 of 2017 concerning national quotas and selection of new student admissions for BMSP, the accreditation status of study programs, national exam exit, teaching Hospitals and the ratio of lecturers to students. The preparation of this capacity is carried out in stages starting from the study program to the university level.
There has been an increase in the number of quotas in recent years, in connection with the accreditation status of study programs. In 2017, the study program obtained B accreditation from Indonesia Accreditation Agency For Higher Education in Health (LAM-PTKES) with a national quota of 150, and in 2022 the study program obtained an A accreditation from LAM-PTKES with the national quota increasing to 250.
