Makassar, August 23, 2025 – The Student Executive Board of the Faculty of Medicine (BEM FK) at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar (Unismuh) successfully carried out a community service program (Pengmas) titled, “Healthy Island, Great Generation: Exploring Child Nutrition and Improving the Quality of Life for Coastal Communities,” on Barrang Caddi Island. The event, which focused on child health and increasing healthy living awareness among the coastal community, took place on Saturday, August 23, 2025.

This community service activity included a comprehensive health check-up and nutritional screening for dozens of children on Barrang Caddi Island. The nutritional assessment was directly led by the Nutrition Department of FK Unismuh, with the goal of identifying the children’s nutritional status and providing direct education to parents about the importance of balanced nutrient intake for optimal growth and development.

In addition to the child screenings, the event also featured a health talk for adult community members. Dr. Nurul Fardillah, Sp.PA delivered an in-depth presentation on Hypertension (High Blood Pressure), covering its symptoms, risks, and tips for the prevention and management of this chronic disease.

Dr. Asdar, Sp.B stated, “This activity is a concrete manifestation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, particularly in the field of community service. We are proud to see the students’ enthusiasm in applying the knowledge gained in college to help the community, especially concerning crucial issues like child nutrition and non-communicable diseases. This shows that FK Unismuh students are not only academically excellent but also possess a high level of social awareness.”

In his speech, Adi Fahja Said, Chairman of BEM FK Unismuh, conveyed that the selection of Barrang Caddi Island as the location was based on the students’ commitment to reach communities in coastal areas.

“The theme ‘Healthy Island, Great Generation’ is not just a slogan. Through this nutritional screening, we hope to be a starting point for improving the health quality of the children on this island, because healthy children are the foundation of a great generation. We hope this small contribution can have a sustainable impact on improving the quality of life for the people of Barrang Caddi Island,” said Adi Fahja Said.

The community service activity ran smoothly and was enthusiastically welcomed by the local community. It is hoped that similar programs can continue to strengthen the collaboration between academics and the community in creating a healthier and more empowered society.
