FKIK Unismuh’s Health Research Ethics Committee Achieves SIDCER-FERCAP International Recognition
The Health Research Ethics Committee (KEPK) of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK) of Universitas Muhammadiyah (Unismuh) Makassar succeeded in obtaining international SIDCER-FERCAP recognition. The submission of the recognition certificate was held at the Korean Medi-hub Research Innovation Auditorium, hosted by the Faculty of Medicine, Catholic University of Daegu, South Korea, Wednesday (30/11/2022).
The news was conveyed directly by the Dean of FKIK Unismuh Prof. Suryani As’ad from Daegu City, South Korea, moments after the awarding of the recognition certificate.
According to Suryani, the Forum for Ethical Review Committees in Asia and the Western Pacific (FERCAP) is a partnership program of the World Health Organization (WHO) Special Training and Research Programme in Tropical Diseases (TDR) under the umbrella of the Strategic Initiative for Developing Capacity in Ethical Review (SIDCER).
“SIDCER-FERCAP is a global strategic initiative related to the protection of health research participants globally,” she said.
Prof Suryani explained that SIDCER-FERCAP has a recognition program, which provides accountability for health research ethics commissions, both in terms of quality and effectiveness of research ethics reviews in order to guarantee the quality of health research ethics commissions in accordance with international standards.
The SIDCER-FERCAP recognition achieved by KEPK Medicine Unismuh is based on the results of an assessment conducted by an assessment team from various FERCAP member ethics commissions from outside and within the country.
The assessment, said Suryani, includes 5 standards, first, the structure and composition of the ethics commission; second, regulations and special policy provisions (SOP); third, the completeness and method of the review process; fourth, after the review process; and fifth, documentation and archiving.
“SIDCER-FERCAP recognition is given to ethics commissions that have met the 5 standard criteria and is valid for 3 years,” said the Dean of FKIK Unismuh.
The handover of the SIDCER-FERCAP Recognition certificate in 2022 was given by the President of SIDCER, Dr. Junctra Karbwang to the Dean of FKIK Unismuh Prof. Suryani As’ad and Secretary of KEPK FKIK Unismuh Makassar Juliani Ibrahim PhD.
In the same place, the 22nd FERCAP International Conference was held. Dean of FKIK Unismuh Prof. Suryani became one of the presenters at the conference. The conference was attended by 500 participants from 18 countries.
