Midwifery Study Program FKIK Unismuh– National Midwife Day falls on Friday, June 24, 2022. The theme of the 71st National Midwives Day commemoration in 2022 is “The Long Struggle of the Midwife Profession to Realize a Superior Generation Towards Advanced Indonesia”.

Midwives are women who have graduated from midwife education and are recognized by the government and professional organizations in the territory of the Republic of Indonesia. A midwife is a person who has the competence and qualifications to be registered, certified, and or legally licensed to practice midwifery.

The professional responsibilities of midwives in the world of health are: Providing support, care, and advice during a woman’s pregnancy, labor and postpartum period; Facilitating and leading childbirth under her own responsibility; Providing care to the baby. This care includes prevention efforts, promotion of normal childbirth, detection of complications in mothers and children, and access to medical or other appropriate assistance, as well as carrying out emergency measures; Midwives also have important duties in counseling and health education, not only to women, but also to families and communities; Provide counseling with activities that include antenatal education and preparation for parenthood, including women’s health, sexual health or reproductive health and child care.

The Indonesian Midwives Association (IBI) was confirmed through the first midwives conference held in Jakarta on June 24, 1951. The IBI organization is made in the form of unity, national in nature, based on Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution. Through the IBI conference, the objectives of IBI were formulated, among others: Promote unity and brotherhood among midwives and women in general, in order to strengthen national unity; Foster the knowledge and skills of members in the midwifery profession, especially in maternal and child health services and family welfare; Assist the government in national development, especially in improving the degree of public health; Improve the dignity and position of midwives in society.

IBI is recognized as a legal entity organization that is valid and registered in State Institution number: J.A.5/92/7 of 1954 (Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia) and as a member of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) in 1956.
