Aligning Educational Standards Across Affiliated Hospitals, FMHS Unismuh Discusses Specialist Medical Education Curricula and Competencies
MAKASSAR – The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar, held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the coordination of specialist medical education placements at affiliated hospitals and the alignment of curricula and competencies for the Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy and Surgery Specialist Medical Education Programs on Monday, 17 August 2026. The event took place in the 7th-floor Meeting Room of PKU Muhammadiyah Unismuh Hospital, Makassar.
The FGD formed part of FMHS Unismuh’s efforts to enhance the quality of its Specialist Medical Education Programs, particularly the Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy and Surgery programs. Both programs implement competency-based education that emphasizes mastery of medical knowledge, clinical skills, professionalism, and medical ethics.
As the 2026/2027 Academic Year progresses, the evaluation of the educational process is essential to ensuring that residents achieve the required competencies. The evaluation encompasses academic and clinical competencies, professional conduct, the effectiveness of clinical supervision, the performance of hospitals as clinical training sites, and the achievement of Program Learning Outcomes. The findings will serve as a basis for preparing and improving the implementation of education in the subsequent semester.
The event was officially opened by the Dean of FMHS, Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar, Prof. Dr. dr. Suryani As’ad, M.Sc., Sp.GK(K). The FGD brought together program administrators, faculty members, and representatives of affiliated hospitals, all of whom play important roles in specialist medical education and residents’ clinical rotations.
The academic sessions began with a presentation on the curriculum of the Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy Specialist Medical Education Program by the Head of the Program, dr. Andi Alamsyah Irwan, M.Kes., Sp.An-TI, Subsp. M.N(K). This was followed by a presentation from the Program Secretary, dr. Juwita Badani, Sp.An-TI, Subsp.TI(K), who outlined the competencies residents are expected to achieve throughout their specialist training.
The discussion then continued with the Surgery Specialist Medical Education Program. The Head of the Program, dr. Asdar, Sp.B, presented the program’s curriculum, while dr. Andhini Palinrungi, Sp.B, SubSpes.Onk(K), M.Kes, presented the competencies expected of surgery residents. The program also included a joint discussion with affiliated hospitals to align the implementation of clinical education across different training sites.
Through the forum, FMHS Unismuh and its affiliated hospitals discussed various aspects of specialist medical education, including the completion of clinical rotations and logbooks, technical and academic challenges encountered at teaching hospitals, rotation systems, competency targets, the assignment of clinical supervisors, and learning mechanisms. This alignment is expected to ensure that residents receive consistent educational experiences that meet the standards and competency targets established by their respective programs, regardless of the hospital in which their clinical rotations are undertaken.
Several affiliated hospitals participated in the coordination forum, including Syekh Yusuf Regional General Hospital in Gowa, Dr. Tadjuddin Chalid General Hospital in Makassar, Labuang Baji Regional General Hospital, Level II Pelamonia Hospital Makassar, PKU Muhammadiyah Unismuh Hospital Makassar, Faisal Islamic Hospital Makassar, and Akademis Jaury Jusuf Putera Hospital. The involvement of affiliated hospitals, specialist physicians, and faculty members is essential to establishing a shared understanding of clinical supervision and the achievement of residents’ competencies.
The FGD is expected to produce an educational evaluation outlining achievements, challenges, and recommendations for improvement, while also providing greater clarity for subsequent educational planning, including academic schedules, competency targets, clinical rotations, and the allocation of teaching faculty and clinical supervisors. The initiative reflects FMHS Unismuh’s commitment to developing a well-structured, sustainable, and quality-oriented specialist medical education system.
