The Nursing Study Program (Prodi) of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK) at Muhammadiyah University Makassar (Unismuh) successfully organized an International Lecture on Saturday, July 22, 2023.

The event took place at the 3rd-floor Hall of FKIK Unismuh Makassar and featured Chintya Jane Villanueva, RN, MN, a lecturer from Ateneo de Davao University, as the keynote speaker.

With the aim of providing new insights and knowledge to nursing students and other healthcare professionals, this international lecture focused on the topic “Overview of Geriatric Nursing in the Philippines.”

Chintya Jane Villanueva, an experienced nursing expert in caring for the elderly, provided a profound overview of the challenges and opportunities in elderly care in the modern era, as well as effective care strategies and evidence-based approaches for the best healthcare services for the elderly in the Philippines.

“This lecture is designed to provide new insights and knowledge to the participants in responding to the increasingly complex healthcare needs of the community, especially with the growing elderly population,” said Dr. Dzar Fadli El Furqan, the organizer and moderator of the event.

According to Ratna Mahmud, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kes., the Head of the Nursing Study Program at FKIK Unismuh, discussions on geriatric nursing are highly relevant to the situation in Southeast Asian countries. “We believe that a strong understanding of gerontology and geriatric care will equip our students to become competent and compassionate nurses for the elderly,” she stated.

More than 100 participants attended the event, demonstrating their enthusiasm for this opportunity to expand their knowledge about current health issues, particularly in the context of the elderly population.

The Nursing Study Program at FKIK Unismuh hopes to continue organizing similar events with interesting and relevant topics as a positive contribution to the development of nursing science and the improvement of healthcare quality for the communities in the Makassar region and its surroundings.
